Active & Healthy Somerset

School Holiday Program Back For 7th Year

Somerset Regional Council's ever-popular multi-sport school holiday program is set to take place in the upcoming September holidays.  This year's program will be conducted across two venues - Esk on 22 and 23 September and Kilcoy on 29 and 30 September.

In an age where children are more inclined to sit at the computer for hours at a time rather than be physically active, this program is an ideal opportunity to emphasise the benefits of health and fitness in a safe and non-competitive setting.

By participating in this year's program, children also have the added bonus of being able to earn valuable Active & Healthy Passport Competition points (1 day = 20 points, 2 days = 50 points, 3 days = 90 points and 4 days = 140 points).

As always there will be an enormous variety of sports and activities for the kids to try including tennis, netball, basketball, soccer, cricket, badminton, Boot Camp, Boxercise, touch footy, golf, rugby league, AFL, rugby union, futsal, circus workshops and indigenous games (all activities subject to availability of development staff).

To book your child's place, or for further information, please contact Scott Aurisch on 5424 4000.  Registration forms will be sent to all Somerset Region primary schools in the coming weeks or can be downloaded from Council's website here.

Beans Around The World

Hey kids,

As part of the Active and Healthy Somerset Passport Competition we would like to offer you an extra chance to win the awesome prizes that we're giving away.  All you have to do is submit your own Beans Around The World project with your passport and you can earn extra points.

AND it's simple.

STEP 1:

You will be randomly assigned a country.  You must research and select a recipe that includes a legume, bean or pulse that you feel represents or is native to your assigned country.

STEP 2:

Find a recipe that you would like to cook and includes legumes, beans or pulses in it or make a recipe up yourself.  Prepare and then taste the recipe.  Share it with your family.

- Make sure that each serve includes at least 1 serve of legumes.

1 serve legumes = ½ cup cooked legumes

STEP 3:

In writing, tell us about your bean dish and include it with your passport:

 - how the bean you picked relates to your country
 - how was the recipe inspired by your country
 - what you liked about the meal
 - would you eat legumes, beans or pulses again?

Include with your passport a photo of you eating this dish or include a drawing of the bean dish that you cooked.

Hints:

- Download the document below for hints on how best to prepare legumes and pulses.
- To get started, assign 1 day each week to try a new recipe, for example, make Wednesday Legumes-day.
- Remember: you can include legumes in any meal throughout the day, not just dinner!
- Try to buy legumes that are locally grown.  If this is too hard, try to buy other ingredients in your recipes that may be locally grown.

Representing Countries:
France, Greece, Sweden, Spain, Mexico, Peru, Egypt, Lebanon, Kenya, Morocco, India, Japan, Indonesia, Italy, Jamaica, South Africa.

Some beans that you may know?
Kidney bean, pinto bean, navy bean, lima bean, butter bean, mung bean, broad bean, chickpea and lentil.

7th annual Rail Trail Fun Run

On Sunday 12 July 2009, Somerset Regional Council will host the 7th annual Rail Trail Fun Run, starting in Lowood and finishing in Fernvale.  Council are delighted to announce Supa IGA Lowood as a major sponsor of the event for the next two years.

Again consisting of two distances - 8.3km and 3km - this year's event will be bigger and better than ever with both races due to start at 9am.  With all the usual post-race entertainment on offer afterwards, this will be a great day for the whole family!

As well as the usual array of food and drink choices, Somerset Regional Council will also be hosting a buffet breakfast to be served under a giant marquee in seated comfort.  See event website for menu and prices.

Entry forms are now available (download here) and online registration and additional event information can be accessed from www.railtrailfunrun.com.au

Active & Healthy Somerset Resource Centre

An important element of the Australian way of life is enjoying the open spaces, natural settings and temperate weather conditions that allow us to lead physically active lives.  Along with the array of family entertainment being provided at Cormorant Bay on 24 January 2009, this event will also see the official launch of the Active & Healthy Somerset Resource Centre.

As a means of overcoming some of the barriers that prevent local residents from leading a healthier lifestyle, including limited access to facilities and equipment, the Active & Healthy Somerset team have acquired a significant collection of sport, health and fitness resources and equipment for the purpose of lending to community members.

This service will operate in a similar fashion to Council's existing library service in that any prospective borrower must be a member and comply with several conditions of lending.

A catalogue showing the equipment available to borrow can be viewed online at www.librarything.com , the username is activeandhealthy  and password is somerset

To become a member of the Active and Healthy Somerset Resource Centre, download the Membership Form &Conditions of Lending    & fax your completed form to 5424 4099 or mail to PO Box 117, Esk Qld 4312.
