Celebrate Australia Day in Somerset

SOMERSET Regional Council will recognise its outstanding residents and welcome 17 new citizens during the official Australia Day Awards ceremony at Esk on Friday, 26 January.

The awards ceremony starts at 9am at the Somerset Civic Centre, 35 Esk Hampton Road, Esk and everyone is welcome. Doors open at 8am.

The annual awards are held to acknowledge individuals and groups in the Somerset region who have made a considerable contribution to the community.

Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said that the Australia Day Awards ceremony is a great way to start Australia Day celebrations.

“Recognising and congratulating those who have given back to the Somerset community is extremely important,” Cr Lehmann said.

“I encourage all Somerset residents to come out and celebrate what it great about our nation and support those nominated for the awards.”

There are six award categories including Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Event of the Year, Sports Award, Arts and Cultural Award and Community Group of the Year.

Seventeen new citizens will also be sworn in as Australian citizens at the ceremony including residents from Britain, China, Philippines and Papua New Guinea.

Cr Lehmann encouraged everyone to attend the ceremony which will feature a special guest speaker and free morning tea on conclusion. 

Somerset residents can also enjoy free entry to each of the pools in Somerset on Australia Day at Lowood, Kilcoy, Toogoolawah and Esk pools between 10am and 5pm.

Each pool will have various games, activities and prizes on offer.
