Inaugural Fishing Comp on Soon at Wivenhoe Dam

THE inaugural Reel Wivenhoe Classic, a non-professional fishing competition on Wivenhoe Dam will get underway on 18-19 August.

Hundreds of anglers have registered for the fishing competition being held at Captain Logan Campgrounds and families are being encouraged to come along and support the event and enjoy a free family festival from midday on Saturday, 18 August.

Families are being encouraged to come and support the Somerset Regional Council which is being organised by Fishing Freshwater.

Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the response to the competition had been extremely positive.

“We have plenty of teams registered for the two-day competition and with Lake Wivenhoe holding the world record for the heaviest Australia Bass, it’s no surprise that this event is popular among anglers,” Cr Lehmann said.

“We’re also encouraging Somerset residents to join in the free family festivities being offered throughout the weekend.”

There will be a range of family friendly activities including free jumping castles, giant slide, rock climbing, fireworks on the Saturday night (8pm), kayak demonstrations/testing and live music.

“We are very excited to be hosting a fishing tournament on Wivenhoe Dam and showcase this fantastic spot to tourists but we also want families to enjoy a great weekend out in Somerset near our beautiful Wivenhoe Dam,” Cr Lehmann said.

“There’s also about $20,000 of prizes up for grabs and visitors to the event on Saturday, 18 August can also buy tickets to go in the draw to win a boat package valued at $10,000.”
