Somerset SES help with Townsville Clean Up

THREE Somerset State Emergency Service volunteers have been deployed to Townsville to help with the clean-up in the aftermath of devastating floods.

The SES have deployed dozens of its volunteers to help the city over the next week in various roles including with volunteer community engagement and clean-up tasks.

Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann thanked the Somerset volunteers for generously donating their time to be away from their family and friends to help those in need.

“In times of need we all come together and that’s fantastic to see,” Cr Lehmann said.

Kilcoy Community Unites for Book Launch

The Kilcoy community were united on Friday, 15 February for the launch of Crunch Munch Bugs for Lunch – a book developed to encourage social inclusion and reduce bullying.

The publication is an initiative of Somerset Regional Council supported by grant funding from Thriving Queensland and produced by the Kilcoy Cares Collaborative.

The book was launched at Kilcoy State School in the presence of hundreds of children and their families to promote caring attributes including appreciating, respecting and enjoying other people’s company.

Upgrades to Forest-Hill Fernvale Road at Lowood Underway

Somerset Regional Council will this week start upgrades to Forest Hill – Fernvale Road at Lowood.

The road resurfacing and widening works are being carried out by Council on behalf of the State Government.

Most of the work will be undertaken on Forest Hill – Fernvale Road between Reinbotts Road and Haslingden Park Drive and a later stage between Church Street and Station Street.

Traffic controllers, reduced speed limits and road signs will be in place to ensure the safety of road workers and motorists while the works are being carried out.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann thanked the community for their understanding and patience while the work is being completed.

Works are anticipated to start on Monday, 18 February and are due for completion mid-2019.

 

Wivenhoe Pocket Land Auction Scheduled

Somerset Regional Council has scheduled a rate arrears auction for a 6.4 hectare vacant lot on the Brisbane Valley Highway at Wivenhoe Pocket.

The auction will be held at the Simeon Lord Room at Esk library, 2 Redbank Street, Esk at 11am on Tuesday, 12 March 2019.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said auctioning land for overdue rates is a last resort for Council.

“Unfortunately, sometimes there is no other option,” he said.

“We only start these sale actions where people have more than three years of rates owing.”

“This is a great property, almost across the road from the magnificent Cormorant Bay parkland on Wivenhoe Dam and I encourage buyers to contact Council for more information.”

Community Assistance Grants Now Open in Somerset

Community organisations are invited to apply for grants from Somerset Regional Council for projects, events or services in Somerset that provide community benefit.

Applications for round two of the Community Assistance Grants for 2018/2019 close 22 February 2019.

Projects must not have a start date before 29 March 2019.
