Somerset Council briefs

Highlights from the Somerset Regional Council meeting held on 12 August 2009 included:

$1.8 million tender accepted for Pointings Bridge
Council has taken advantage of favourable market conditions to award a $1.8 million tender to construct a new two lane bridge over Lockyer Creek 3 kms north of Lowood.

Construction Project Management Pty Ltd of Pine Mountain was selected from 16 tenderers for the project. The company has indicated that most of the workforce for the contract will be sourced locally.

The Pointings Bridge project is jointly funded by Somerset Regional Council and the Australian Government under the Roads to Recovery Program.

The Council will also undertake $500,000 in improvements to approaches to the bridge.

Somerset community grants
Somerset Regional Council has approved more than $50,000 in grants to more than 30 community groups from throughout the region as part of its first round of approvals.

Grants include $5,000 for the Kilcoy Art Society to help fund the relocation of the Courthouse Art Gallery to Yowie Park.

New car parking and bitumen seal access for Fernvale campdraft grounds
Council will construct 40 sealed car parks and a bitumen access road through the Fernvale campdraft grounds in connection with the indoor sports centre development.

The new car parks will be available for users of the Fernvale Community Hall and campdraft grounds as well as users of the new sports centre.
