Somerset Briefs 2nd September 2009

Highlights from the Somerset Regional Council meeting held on 2 September 2009 included:

Animal shelter plans released
Council has released plans of its proposed $500,000 new animal shelter to be located at the Esk landfill featuring large earth and concrete berm walls to contain noise. Independent external noise consultants appointed by Council reported that the kennels can "readily comply with reasonable noise emission criteria at the nearest dwelling at all times of the day and night."

The new animal shelter has been designed to meet RSPCA animal welfare guidelines and environmental laws and with a view to meeting growing cat impoundment rates with new State-wide cat registration laws.

Security camera funding confirmed
Council has adopted a second revised budget confirming $44,000 of expenditure for stage 2 of the installation of security cameras in the Lowood/ Fernvale area.

Some cameras were installed in Lowood during 2008 with Council noting a reduction in many forms of crime and anti-social behaviour since installation.

Developments approved
Council has conditionally approved 17 further residential allotments for Honeywood Estate in Fernvale and 5 new residential allotments in Kilcoy in a number of locations.

Decision on motor sports facility near Esk
Council refused an application for a motor racing and entertainment facility southwest of Esk on noise, environmental and other grounds.
