SOMERSET Regional Council’s average residential rates and charges for 2018/19 were the most affordable in South-East Queensland, Local Government Comparative Reports confirm.

The annual State Government report details efficiency, effectiveness and quality-of-service indicators from councils across Queensland.

It includes data on finances, staff, road infrastructure, waste management, library services and parks and gardens.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the report reflected council’s commitment to affordable rates and effective services.

“This confirms what we already knew – average residential rates and charges in Esk, Fernvale, Kilcoy, Lowood and Toogoolawah are the most affordable in South-East Queensland,” Cr Lehmann said.

“As a council our philosophy has always been to find practical solutions for providing services and to look to revenue sources other than rates where possible.

“We are also acutely aware that, while they are improving, median household incomes in Somerset are lower than many other areas.

“The report again shows Somerset has the lowest ratio of full-time equivalent staff per head of population of any local government area in Queensland with less than 50,000 people.”
