SOMERSET Regional Council is encouraging the community to support Rural Road Safety Month in August.

An initiative of the Australian Road Safety Foundation, the campaign raises awareness of driver behaviour in rural and regional areas across the country.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said rural road crashes accounted for about 65 per cent of the Australian road toll.

“Somerset is a vast and diverse area, and our road network includes major highways, suburban streets and unsealed sections of road,” Cr Lehmann said.

“As a council we are committed to maintaining this road network and associated bridge infrastructure, and we encourage both our residents and our visitors to continue to drive with safety top of mind.

“Somerset Regional Council is proud to support Rural Road Safety Month, and we will promote the campaign’s key messages to the community through our social media channels.”
