NOMINATIONS are now open for the third annual Somerset Garden Competition.

Somerset Regional Council and Searles have once again partnered to present the event, with major categories for Best Rural Garden, Best Urban Garden and Best Business/Community Group Garden.

Winners will receive $500 and a signature Searles gift pack valued at $100, runners-up will take home $150, and bonus category award winners will pocket $250. All entrants will receive a Searles gift pack.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said nominations closed at 5pm on Wednesday, 2 October, with the competition to culminate in an open gardens weekend on 25 and 26 October.

“While we acknowledge our community is doing it tough due to lack of rain, Somerset still boasts some really beautiful gardens,” Cr Lehmann said.

“One of the bonus categories will recognise the best water wise garden, and it is great to see people thinking outside the square, being a bit creative and adapting their planting to suit the environment.

“It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to maintain an award-winning garden, and this is council’s way of acknowledging that commitment.

“The competition wouldn’t be possible without the support of Searles, along with local gardening enthusiast Di McCauley, sponsor of the runner-up and bonus categories.”
