AWARD-WINNING gardens across Somerset will be celebrated next weekend.

Entrants in the third annual Somerset Garden Competition are scheduled to open their properties from 9am to 2pm on Saturday 26 and Sunday, 27 October.

Somerset Regional Council and Searles once again partnered to present the event, with major categories for Best Rural Garden, Best Business/Community Group Garden and Best Urban Garden.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said community interest in the competition was strong despite the ongoing drought.

“Given the hot and dry conditions, it was great to receive so many high-quality entries. In fact, we enjoyed an increase on last year’s event,” Cr Lehmann said.

“Our major winners were Shelley Pedersen for Best Rural Garden, West Moreton Landcare for Best Business/Community Group Garden, and Heather Shelton for Best Urban Garden.

“It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to maintain an award-winning garden, and I encourage locals and visitors alike to get out and about next weekend and see what Somerset green thumbs have to offer.

“The competition wouldn’t be possible without the support of Searles, along with local gardening enthusiast Di McCauley, sponsor of the runner-up and bonus categories.”
