Money can buy happiness, when you buy local

LET the buck stop in Somerset and shop locally.

LET the buck stop in Somerset and shop locally.

That’s the message from Town Proud foundation sponsor Somerset Regional Council.

Council is supporting the popular promotion for the fifth consecutive year, encouraging residents to keep cash in the community by spending at businesses big and small.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said being Town Proud and buying local went hand in hand.

“It’s great to once again be a foundation sponsor, supporting Somerset businesses which in turn provides a boost for our communities and the economy across the region,” Cr Lehmann said.

“It’s an important campaign, particularly as spending increases when the festive season approaches, and it’s all about fostering growth at the grassroots of our rural townships.

“The whole Town Proud and buy local concepts are now more important than ever, given many of our residents and business owners are struggling with the impacts of the ongoing drought.

“When people purchase from locally owned businesses more money is kept in the community, and in most cases these businesses are making purchases from other locals, so the cycle of spending continues.”

Councillor Lehmann said council put its money where its mouth was by supporting Somerset businesses of all sizes.

“From coffee to construction, council is really committed to supporting local businesses,” Cr Lehmann said.

“We do this wherever possible, through the implementation of various business registers, engaging local suppliers, and awarding tenders and contracts.

“Of course, many of our staff live in Somerset, and they support surrounding businesses each and every day.

“The flow-on effects of this can’t be underestimated – spending locally helps to create jobs, growth and prosperity across the region.”
