Celebrate Australia Day in Somerset

POOL parties, award presentations and a citizenship ceremony will headline Somerset Regional Council’s Australia Day events on Sunday, 26 January.

Celebrations will start with the annual Australia Day Awards and citizenship ceremony at Somerset Civic Centre from 9am to 11am.

The morning will include the presentation of six awards, live entertainment, morning tea and an address by Somerset Australia Day Ambassador and social change activist Olivia Hargroder.

The family fun will continue with free pool parties at Esk (11am to 4pm), Lowood, Toogoolawah and Kilcoy (all 10am to 5pm).

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said Australia Day was a time to celebrate outstanding achievers from across the region.

“Awards will be presented to acknowledge our Arts and Cultural, Sports, Event, Community Group, Young Citizen and Citizen of the Year,” Cr Lehmann said.

“We will also officially welcome more than 30 new Australians of all ages at a citizenship ceremony.”

 

Somerset Australia Day Award nominees:

Event of the Year: Esk Garden & Lifestyle Fair, Esk Show.

Community Group of the Year: Kilcoy Cancer Support Group, Lions Club of Fernvale, Lowood Scout Group, Valley of the Lakes Garden Club.

Arts and Cultural: Robin Garland-Sticovich.

Sports: Renee Retschlag, Nathan Shearman, Gerald Youles.

Young Citizen of the Year: Jordan Frohloff, Jed Hall, Brianna Wade.

Citizen of the Year: Estelle Drynan, Paul Heymans, Patrick ‘Rusty’ Kraut, Catharina Kusay, Jayne McKenzie, Bill Parker, May Wallace.
