SOMERSET Regional Council has launched an advocacy roadmap ahead of the State Government elections in October.

Council is calling on the State Government to address six key challenges impacting the Somerset region.

Somerset Mayor Jason Wendt said the Somerset community needs a State Government who will listen and act on the concerns of regional communities.

“We are calling on the State Government to fix the notorious Brisbane Valley Highway. It’s a deathtrap and needs investment,” Cr Wendt said.

“This highway has been left to deteriorate for far too long and its high time the State stepped up and invested into fixing this major arterial road in Somerset.

“This highway, in its current state, is the biggest impediment to growth of our region.”

Cr Wendt said Council is also calling on the State Government to invest in Seqwater’s recreational and sporting assets ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“In addition, we are calling on the State Government to help fund the fight against fire ants. They are a significant threat to our community, the state and the nation. If these invasive pests take hold, they will decimate the agricultural industry and cost the country exponentially. We can’t afford to take that risk.

”We are also calling on the State Government to invest in public safety along and in the Mid Brisbane River and for the State to commit to water security by investing in the Lockyer Valley and Somerset Water Collaborative.

“And we are also calling on the State Government to pass on proceeds from its State Government Waste Levy so council can upgrade regional waste transfer stations.”

Cr Wendt said there were far too many areas in Somerset that needed attention and significant investment from the State.

“At the end of the day, Somerset Regional Council needs a State Government who will invest in our region and will commit to making changes for a stronger future that prioritises our community,” he said.

“This advocacy roadmap provides clarity on what we are asking for from the State Government.

“Too often our community is left behind and we are proud to stand up and advocate for our region. It’s time the State Government listened.”
