Somerset Regional Council Meeting Highlights 11 September 2024
Expansion to Kilcoy Indoor Sports Centre in the pipeline
The Kilcoy Indoor Sports Centre has been earmarked for a huge expansion.
The two-stage expansion will result in the facility in Hope Street doubling its floor space and catering for more users and increased diversity in its offering.
The gymnasium will be expanded and refurbished and integrate a children’s area, café facilities, two multipurpose courts, allied health consulting rooms, change rooms, toilets, and include more than 130 car parks.
Somerset Mayor Jason Wendt said the expansion was a significant development for the region and one that would support a growing active and healthy community.
“Council anticipates that stage one of the expansion will cost about $5.7 million and that’s a significant investment in key infrastructure for our community,” Cr Wendt said.
“With that said, we are waiting on the outcome of a grant application lodged under the Queensland Government’s SEQ Community Stimulus Program where we are seeking $2.8 million.”

Council to apply for funding for strategy on housing
Somerset Regional Council has endorsed a Local Housing Action Plan that identifies needs and solutions to help coordinate a response to housing challenges locally.
As part of the adoption of the plan, Council will apply for funding to develop a Growth Management Strategy to potentially address a shortage of available housing in Somerset.
The adoption of a Local Housing Action Plan is a result of a Queensland Government direction for local governments to develop a Growth Strategy.
Somerset Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke said the report was a step in the right direction.
“My concern is our growing and ageing population in the region and providing dedicated and accessible housing for them,” Cr Brieschke said.
Community assistance extended to Somerset groups
Somerset Regional Council has awarded more than a dozen Community Assistance Grants to various community groups.
The grants, totalling more than $18,000 will help a variety of groups from Kilcoy through to Fernvale.
