Draft Economic Development Strategy

Council is currently undertaking public consultation on the draft Economic Development Strategy for the Somerset region. Please visit Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ page to find out more!

The draft strategy will open for public consultation on Monday, 26 September and close on Monday, 17 October.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said council had engaged Lucid Economics to develop the draft strategy with some clear objectives in mind.

“The economic development strategy has been designed to facilitate and drive sustainable growth and prosperity in Somerset,” Cr Lehmann said.

“The strategy outlines how Council will act as a catalyst to facilitate the next major transition of the economy in Somerset over the next decade or two.”

Cr Lehmann said the draft Economic Development Strategy was a culmination of plenty of research and high-level engagement.

“The project started in early 2022 and included a detailed economic and industry analysis, stakeholder engagement and workshops with key industry groups and representatives,” Cr Lehmann said.

“Now it’s time for our community to review the draft and have their say on some of the key components and objectives outlined in the draft strategy.”

The draft strategy also highlighted some barriers that will need to be tackled to achieve economic progression in Somerset including improving telecommunications, available child care, and available land for residential and industrial developments

The Economic Development Plan and Tourism Strategy are implemented and monitored in consultation with Somerset Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee (EDTAC).
