Somerset Regional Council has tonnes of activities these school holidays with a drama workshop, arts and crafts and the 23rd annual Somerset Rail Trail Classic.

WINTER is here and so is Somerset Regional Council’s School Holiday Program, packed with hands on activities for all ages.

Somerset Mayor Jason Wendt said the program was full of exciting activities for all ages and interests.

“There will be plenty to do around the region over the two weeks, with everything from drama workshops to hands on arts and crafts.” Cr Wendt said.

To kick off the School Holiday Program, the Somerset Civic Centre will host a two-day drama workshop on 2 and 3 July brought to you by THAT Production company and facilitated by Tom Yaxley.

This workshop will show young performers how to take a script on a page and bring it to life through character development, storytelling, movement, voice, rehearsal, and performance.

The workshop is designed for students aged 10 to 17 years, and each registration includes a free cast T-shirt.

In June, Council will also celebrate ‘50 years of Deadly’ for NAIDOC Week with First Nations workshops and activities at our Somerset Libraries.

Cr Wendt said the workshops was an opportunity for our younger generation to let their imagination run wild and embrace Australia’s cultural history.

“From workshops on clay shapes and prints, nature crafts and puzzles, kids will have the opportunity to explore the rich history of our country.” Cr Wendt said.

Starting 9am Monday, 6 July the Kilcoy Library will host a Special Storytime with Yamatji-Noongar elder, Aunty Rhonda Collard Spratt, and community development worker and writer, Jacki Ferro.

This year's event will feature an 8km and 3km walk or run as well as two bike ride options, 44km and 20km.

Somerset Councillor Brett Freese said this year’s event will have a something for everyone.

“Whether you’re looking to take home the gold or just wanting to enjoy the Somerset scenery as you make your way through the region, the Somerset Rail Trail Classic is a guaranteed fun family day out.” Cr Freese said.
