Kilcoy Indoor Sports Centre Redevelopment

Following the release of the Kilcoy Sport and Recreation Needs Analysis in June 2020, Somerset Regional Council adopted the Kilcoy Indoor Sports Centre Redevelopment Master Plan in December 2022.

The Master Plan, which provides a long-term vision for the facility that meets growing community demand for health and fitness, allied health, gymnastics and indoor sports, has been instrumental to the progression of the Kilcoy Indoor Sports Centre Redevelopment. Split into two stages, the Redevelopment aims to align with community expectations, service current and future sport and recreation demand, and maximise the facility’s usage outcomes and long-term sustainability. Stage 1 is the first step towards achieving these goals.

Stage 1 – Kilcoy Indoor Sports Centre Redevelopment

Somerset Regional Council has received funding through the Queensland Government 2024-27 South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program for Stage 1 of the Kilcoy Indoor Sports Centre Redevelopment, with the works to be completed in 2026.

Stage 1 works of the Kilcoy Indoor Sports Centre include:

  • Redevelopment of the existing centre including:
    • Expanded gym area with 24-hour access
    • Construction of new mezzanine area with multi-purpose rooms
    • Construction of new amenities
    • Construction of new entry, office, kiosk and store facilities
    • Expanded gymnasium area, including kids play area, and gymnastics hall
    • Improved ventilation and temperature control including air conditioning of the gym
  • Construction of carparking and access arrangements including a bus turn around and drop off on Hope Street
  • Landscaping

In addition, detailed designs for Stage 2 of the Kilcoy Indoor Sport Centre Redevelopment – including the installation of multi-purpose indoor courts, new change rooms, new amenities, referees change area and first aid area – will be developed for future use.

Background and Engagement

The Kilcoy Sport and Recreation Needs Analysis provided Council with information to inform strategic decision making for the development, enhancement and allocations of sport and recreation facilities in Kilcoy. The analysis included many of Kilcoy’s organisations and groups, and a public survey was presented to the general community.

Somerset Regional Council engaged consultants, Otium Planning Group, to assist in delivering The Kilcoy Indoor Sports Centre Redevelopment Master Plan. The Plan was developed under the oversight of a steering committee comprising representatives of Councillors, Council officers, Kilcoy Gymnastics Club, Education Queensland, Kilcoy Aquatic Centre and the Kilcoy Indoor Sports Centre. The community were invited to provide feedback on the Draft Master Plan via an online survey, with hard copies available at the Kilcoy Customer Service Centre and Library, Kilcoy Indoor Sports Centre and Kilcoy Visitor Information Centre.

The Master Plan identifies what the site and facilities should look like and how they should function in the future and has been vital to design development.

Council is currently working with the Facility Manager of the Kilcoy Indoor Sports Centre, Somerset Health and Fitness, to provide temporary alternative facilities during the works to allow the community to continue to undertake recreational activities.
