When is the current dog registration period?
Council has approved a two-year dog registration period from 1 July 2026 to 31 July 2028.
When do I need to pay to receive the discount?
To receive the discounted registration fee, payment must be made by 30 September 2026.
How much does it cost to register a desexed dog?
A desexed dog registered during the discount period costs $90. After the discount period ends, the fee is $140.
How much does it cost to register a dog that is not desexed?
A dog that is not desexed costs $190 during the discount period. After the discount period ends, the fee is $240.
What happens if I do not register my dog?
The fine for failing to register a dog is $345.
Why does dog registration matter?
Dog registration helps Council provide services that pets and owners rely on, including helping reunite lost pets with their families, operating pound facilities, supporting dog off-leash areas and maintaining agility equipment for community use.
Is dog registration required by law?
Yes. Under Queensland law, dog owners are required to register their dogs with their local council.
Do cats need to be registered?
No. Cat registration is not required under Queensland state legislation or Council local laws.
What if my dog gets out or is impounded?
No matter how careful you are, dogs can and do escape. To make it less expensive to bring your best friend home, Council has reduced impounding fees by 90% for the first impoundment each financial year.
Do I need a new dog tag?
Dog tags do not need to be replaced unless a tag is lost or damaged. Contact Council for a free replacement tag if needed.
What details should I keep up to date?
Please let Council know if your contact details have changed, your dog has been desexed, or your dog has passed away. Proof is required if your dog has been desexed.
