About Disaster Management
Disaster management in the Somerset region focuses on reducing risk, protecting lives, supporting communities during emergencies and assisting recovery after disaster events. Somerset Regional Council plays a central role in coordinating local disaster management activities in partnership with emergency services, government agencies, infrastructure providers and the community.
Somerset Regional Council is responsible for planning, preparedness, coordination and information sharing at the local level. This work is guided by Queensland’s disaster management arrangements and aims to ensure the region is ready to respond effectively to a range of hazards, including natural and non‑natural disasters.
Somerset Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG)
Disaster management in Somerset is led through the Somerset Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG). The LDMG is established under Queensland legislation and provides the framework for local disaster planning, coordination and response.
The LDMG is responsible for ensuring:
- Local disaster management arrangements are in place and regularly reviewed, which includes the development of a Local Disaster Management Plan (LDMP)
- Disaster risks within the region are identified and managed
- Planning supports prevention, preparedness, response and recovery activities
- Coordination arrangements are ready to support emergency services during events
The group meets regularly and is chaired by the Mayor of Somerset Regional Council.
Working Together to Support the Community
The Somerset LDMG consists of representatives from Somerset Regional Council, emergency services, utility providers and relevant state government agencies. This multi‑agency approach ensures a coordinated and effective response to disaster events.
By working together, these organisations support:
- Community safety during emergencies
- Coordination of response activities
- Public information and warnings
- Access to relief and recovery support
Strong partnerships help ensure that decisions are well‑informed and resources are used where they are needed most.
Local Disaster Coordination Centre (LDCC)
During significant disaster events, Somerset Regional Council may activate the Local Disaster Coordination Centre (LDCC). The LDCC provides a central point for coordinating disaster response activities across the region.
When activated, the LDCC supports:
- Coordination between Council, emergency services and partner agencies
- Collection and sharing of situational information
- Community information and public messaging
- Support for response and early recovery operations
The activation of the LDCC helps ensure a structured, timely and coordinated response to events affecting the Somerset region.
Community Resilience and Shared Responsibility
Effective disaster management relies on shared responsibility. While Council and emergency services coordinate response and recovery, community preparedness and cooperation are essential.
Residents, businesses and community organisations are encouraged to:
- Understand local disaster risks
- Prepare plans and emergency kits
- Follow official warnings and advice
- Support one another during and after disaster events
Building resilience before disasters occur helps communities recover more quickly and reduces the overall impact of emergencies.
