Tiny worlds, tall tales unfolds as an exploration of the hidden interior – the realm where the inner child continues to dream, build, and remember. Within this world, play becomes a language for emotion, and the house becomes a vessel for memory and imagination, suspended between the safety of belonging and the ache of displacement.
Anna Gonzalez is a Spanish-born, Brisbane-based artist whose work explores memory, resilience, and transformation through a lens of dark humour and theatricality. Growing up in Spain during the final years of Franco’s authoritarian regime, Gonzalez was deeply affected by political and religious repression, including the imprisonment and torture of close family members. These formative experiences shaped her rebellious spirit and fueled a lifelong practice rooted in absurdity, imagination, and resistance.
Gonzalez’s current practice centres on creating ephemeral dioramas – miniature theatrical scenes crafted from drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and puppet-making. These intricate sets are photographed under carefully designed lighting and then dismantled, with the photograph serving as the final artwork. This process highlights the fragility of memory and the transient nature of human experience
