TWO MAJOR streetscape projects in the Somerset region have taken their first steps thanks to $1.66 million in funding from the South East Queensland (SEQ) Liveability Fund, under the SEQ City Deal.

The Kilcoy Streetscape Revitalisation and Lowood Futures Strategy are urban renewal projects which aim to enhance the identity, character and quality of the Somerset towns.

Somerset Regional Council Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke said the Kilcoy and Lowood communities were given a taste of what is to come with the completion of both streetscapes’ first major construction pieces in early 2026.

“At our northern gateway in Kilcoy, the new Aston Park Precinct provides an additional 18 car parks, 10 RV and long vehicle spaces, revitalised gazebos, seating and bike racks, wayfinding and historical and ecology signage,” Cr Brieschke said.

“This project has delivered an inviting rest area for residents and people visiting Kilcoy, and its green character, shared spaces and friendly atmosphere sets the stage for Kilcoy’s future streetscape.”

“In Lowood, the new Station Street Carpark has 36 new parking spaces, including accessible parking, and a pedestrian connection to Railway Street.

“This carpark provides Lowood workers, residents and visitors a new, convenient place to park, and provides breathing room for Council to progress future streetscape stages.”

The two projects were jointly funded through the SEQ Liveability Fund, a commitment under the SEQ City Deal. The Deal is a partnership between the Australian Government, Queensland Government and Council of Mayors (SEQ) that aims to deliver projects of long-lasting benefits to SEQ. Somerset Regional Council also contributed funding to the project.

The Aston Park Precinct received additional funding through Queensland Hydro’s Community Benefits Program.

Somerset Councillors joined Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann, Queensland Hydro representatives and Kilcoy Streetscape Advisory Committee members in officially opening the Aston Park Precinct on Monday, 24 August.

Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann said the Australian Government was proud to support the Aston Park Carpark in Kilcoy and the Station Street Carpark in Lowood.

“The new Aston Park Carpark and landscaping have created a vibrant, welcoming and green arrival experience for Kilcoy, which will attract locals and visitors alike,” Mr Neumann said.

“In addition, the Station Street Carpark in Lowood has made land available for the community, while providing convenient access to destinations around town, like the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

“The Albanese Government is committed to making sure our investments leave a real legacy for our regions, and these important community infrastructure projects are helping to make the Somerset Region an even better place to live and work.”

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said the Crisafulli Government was proud to partner with Somerset Regional Council to deliver projects that made a real and lasting difference for local communities.

“Whether it is revitalising a town centre, improving parking and connectivity, or creating more welcoming public spaces, these projects are about making sure Somerset has the infrastructure it needs to grow and thrive,” Ms Frecklington said.

“The Aston Park Precinct and Lowood Station Street Carpark are great examples of what can be achieved when all levels of government work together, with a shared focus on delivering better outcomes for local residents.

“The Crisafulli Government will continue to work closely with Somerset Regional Council to support the growth of Kilcoy, Lowood and communities right across the Nanango electorate.”
