Somerset residents urged to prepare for severe weather

Somerset Regional Council’s Disaster Dashboard has up to date emergency information, local warnings, road conditions and closures, flood mapping and other resources.
SOMERSET Regional Council is encouraging residents to take practical steps to prepare their homes, property and families for the upcoming severe weather season as part of Get Ready Week, running from 5 to 11 October.
Somerset Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair Jason Wendt said Get Ready Week was an important reminder that preparing for emergency situations could significantly reduce their impact.
"The best time to prepare is right now, not when the warning is issued," Cr Wendt said.
"Our residents know how quickly conditions can change and we have seen our share of severe storms, flash flooding and bushfires.
“Having a plan, preparing your home and staying informed can help your family stay safe and minimise damage to your property."
Cr Wendt said simple actions taken now could save time, money and stress when natural disasters strike.
"For many, preparation may be as straightforward as clearing out gutters and drains, trimming trees near homes and sheds, securing loose outdoor items and checking that roofs and structures are in good condition,” Cr Wendt said.
“Bushfire preparedness is just as important, particularly for those living on rural properties across the region.
"Keep grass short around your home, removing leaf litter and other combustible materials, maintaining property access and ensuring pumps, hoses and water supplies are in working order can all help reduce bushfire risk.
"Every household should also have an emergency kit, know how they will stay in contact during an emergency and familiarise themselves with Council’s Disaster Dashboard."
The Disaster Dashboard provides up to date emergency information, local warnings, road conditions and closures, flood mapping and other resources.
"The Disaster Dashboard is a valuable source of information before, during and after an emergency event," Cr Wendt said.
