AFTER a successful trial in 2025-2026, Community Council Meetings will return to towns across Somerset in 2026-2027.
Somerset Regional Council will schedule meetings to be held in Glamorgan Vale, Mount Kilcoy and Coominya over the next financial year.
Somerset Mayor Jason Wendt said Community Council Meetings fostered community engagement, provided residents with greater access to Councillors and senior staff, and helped build understanding of Council's decision-making processes.
“We had very positive feedback from the Kilcoy, Fernvale and Linville communities where we held meetings last year,” Cr Wendt said.
“These meetings provide an opportunity for the community to interact face-to-face with Councillors and senior officers in Council.
“We’re excited to continue this offering and we look forward to welcoming the Glamorgan Vale, Mount Kilcoy and Coominya communities to future meetings. “
Cr Wendt said Somerset was a vast and disparate region.
“We are the largest Council in South East Queensland, yet we have the smallest population spread across five major towns and many smaller villages,” Cr Wendt said.
“This presents a unique challenge in how Council can effectively engage with residents.
“Community Council Meetings allow us to bridge the gap, bringing a core function of Council operations out to the community and putting it on full display.”
Councillor Tiara Hurley said the community showed a keen interest in Council decision-making processes.
“I love this concept and the attendance we’ve had at the previous community meetings has been excellent,” Cr Hurley said.
“It’s been a great way to engage with community members and even the local schools that come along to the meeting.
“I would love to think this service has created interest in the next generation in becoming Councillors one day.”
All other Council meetings will continue to be held in the Simeon Lord Room in Esk Library, which the community is also welcome to attend.
The community is asked to contact council and provide 24 hours’ notice if they plan to attend council meetings.
