SOMERSET Regional Council has selected winning character designs for a new children’s book, set to be launched in June 2026.
The children’s book forms part of a larger initiative to make Somerset a dementia-friendly region.
Last year, Somerset students were asked to draw their favourite older person which would help inspire character design for the book.
The winning design was drawn by Toogoolawah State School year 5 student Lara Sclosa, depicting her rock star grandma, Carla.
The new fictional character, Disco Nanna, will go on an adventure throughout Somerset in the soon-to-be-released book.
Artwork by fellow Toogoolawah State School year 5 student Sari Cooley, depicting her own grandma Bev, will also appear along the journey.
Social Plan Advisory Committee Chair, Councillor Michael Bishop, said the initiative encouraged young children to think about older people in a positive way and to make older people feel appreciated by children.
“We were delighted to receive 168 characters created by Somerset’s young artists, which were proudly displayed at Council’s Regional Seniors Event in October,” Cr Bishop said.
“Council will now produce a story and artwork, featuring businesses and community groups around Somerset who are taking positive steps towards becoming dementia friendly.
“This project is just one of many initiatives our Council is taking to make Somerset a dementia-friendly region.”
Cr Bishop encouraged businesses, not-for-profit organisations and clubs within Somerset to becoming dementia aware.
“This is an important first step in the process of becoming dementia friendly,” Cr Bishop said.
“Council will be coordinating dementia friendly training for Somerset businesses and community groups over the next few months, and all organisations which undertake training will be listed as dementia friends in the children’s book.
“Any organisations looking for information can speak with Council’s Community Development Coordinator.”
Somerset Regional Council’s dementia-friendly initiative is supported by the Queensland Government Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety following a successful application for $42,200 in funding through the Age-friendly Community Development Grant program.
