SOMERSET Regional Council has bid farewell to Mayor Graeme Lehmann after thirty years’ service.  

A celebratory morning tea was held for the Mayor on 13 March following his last council meeting at Esk.  

Cr Lehmann started his local government career in Somerset as a councillor of Esk Shire Council in 1994 before becoming Mayor in 2004.  

Mayor Lehmann's tenure has been marked by a commitment to achieving positive funding outcomes, with his efforts focused on benefiting the Somerset community, ensuring sustainable growth and development.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Johnson reflected on Cr Lehmann’s many accomplishments spanning three decades.  

“Mayor Lehmann has been instrumental in driving progress, fostering unity, and enhancing the quality of life for residents,” Mr Johnson said.  

“Working collaboratively with the Somerset community led to remarkable achievements under Mayor Lehmann's leadership. These include the impressive accomplishment of eliminating Council debt, positioning Somerset as the only debt-free council in south east Queensland.

“His leadership style has been characterised by vision, compassion, and a tireless commitment to service.”  

Mr Johnson said throughout his tenure, Mayor Lehmann has championed initiatives to improve infrastructure, foster economic growth, and promote social cohesion.  

“His efforts have left an lasting mark on Somerset, shaping the community into a vibrant and inclusive place to live and work,” he said.  

“His leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to public service have left an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. While his departure marks the end of an era, it also signals the beginning of a new chapter in Somerset's history—a chapter shaped by Mayor Lehmann's vision, compassion, and dedication to excellence. Many of us will never forget Mayor Lehmann's belief that Somerset is 'God's Own Country.'”

Councillor Cheryl Gaedtke was also recognised at the morning tea for her contributions to local government spanning forty years. Her service includes eight years’ service as a councillor and 31 years as a council employee.  

Mr Johnson said Cr Gaedtke's career with council stands as a testament to her unwavering dedication to the community's welfare and advancement.
