VANDALS have caused significant damage to the Fernvale Sports Park impacting users at the start of the football season.

The damage comes just one week after vandals deliberately destroyed a soccer field at the Lowood Recreational Complex.

Both facilities are owned by Somerset Regional Council and managed by various user groups for the benefit of the community.

Between 10am on Tuesday, 23 April and 6am on Wednesday, 24 April, vandals have cut through electrical cables on several light towers at the popular sports ground, adjacent to the Brisbane Valley Highway.

Somerset Mayor Jason Wendt has slammed the latest incident as a blatant disregard for community.

“Council installed these lights in 2021 to support the operations of the Brisbane Valley Rattlers Australian Rules Football Club and the Marburg Mount Crosby Cricket Club,” Cr Wendt said.

“This damage is extremely disappointing. It’s disruptive to the community and the reality is the attempted theft has accomplished nothing.

“The vandals have pulled cabling out of the ground, likely seeking copper, but have instead pulled aluminium out of the ground and then abandoned the site.”

“The reality is, the actions of these vandals is disrupting the lives of facility users and costing rate payers unnecessarily.”

Cr Wendt said council would review CCTV footage of the site and pass on all relevant footage to police.

“Council has progressively been upgrading all of our facilities to LED light fixtures in recent years and as a result we no longer have copper cabling at our sites,” he said.

“Council will also look at implementing further provisions to stop these vandals in the future.”

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact Police.

The Fernvale Sports Park is the latest community site damaged by vandals.
