First 5 Forever
Up to 90% of a child's brain development happens in the first 5 years.
An initiative of the State Library of Queensland, First 5 Forever is a universal family literacy program aimed at supporting stronger language and literacy environments for young children from 0–5 years and their families.
First 5 Forever will directly support parents and primary caregivers to be confident as the child’s first and most important teacher, and will provide parents with increased access to resources they need through public libraries.
At Somerset Libraries, we provide families access to two regular First 5 Forever programs: Storytime and Toddler Tuesday.
In addition to our regular inhouse First 5 Forever programs, you might also find us out and about in the community providing outreach services. We often make appearances at the local shows, Under 8s Days, and even your local playground or kindergarten.
If you are really lucky you might even spot our snazzy First 5 Forever trailer on a street near you.
Pop-Up Library Boxes
Our Pop-Up Library Boxes are strategically scattered across the Somerset region in areas where families are often required to wait for prolonged periods of time e.g. doctor’s surgeries and speech pathology clinics. In addition to building key literacy skills, sharing these Pop-Up Library Books with the child in your care is a wonderful way to relieve boredom, anxiety and excess energy whilst you are waiting together for your appointment. The contents of each box are changed over regularly so you never know what books will keep you company at your next appointment.
Are you a community organisation interested in receiving a special visit from our team? Or maybe you think a pop-up library box would be fantastic at your location? We would love to hear from you. Please get in touch via the enquiry form on the ‘Ask Us’ page.
